Dental Bridges in Scarborough, Ontario- Restore Your Smile

A dental bridge is a fixed dental restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth.

The replacement tooth, known as a pontic, fills the space left by the missing tooth. Depending on the type of bridge, the pontic is supported by neighbouring teeth or dental implants.

Unlike a removable partial denture, a traditional dental bridge is fixed in place and is not normally removed by the patient.

Why Replace a Missing Tooth?

Replacing a missing tooth can help restore both the appearance and function of your smile.

A dental bridge may help:

  • Restore your ability to chew comfortably
  • Improve the appearance of your smile
  • Help maintain the natural spacing between teeth
  • Prevent neighbouring teeth from shifting into the empty space
  • Restore aspects of normal speech and function
  • Support a more balanced bite

Your dentist can discuss the potential benefits and limitations of replacing the missing tooth based on your individual circumstances.

Types of Dental Bridges

There are several types of bridges. The best option depends on the location of the missing tooth, the condition of the surrounding teeth, and your overall oral health.

Traditional Dental Bridge

A traditional bridge uses crowns placed over the teeth adjacent to the missing tooth. These supporting teeth, called abutment teeth, hold the replacement tooth in position.

This is one of the most commonly used types of dental bridges.

Cantilever Bridge

A cantilever bridge is supported by a tooth on only one side of the missing tooth.

This type of bridge is not appropriate for every situation and is generally considered when the location and forces on the restoration make it suitable.

Maryland Bridge

A Maryland bridge uses a framework attached to the back surfaces of neighbouring teeth to support the replacement tooth.

Because it generally requires less alteration to the supporting teeth, it may be considered in certain situations, particularly toward the front of the mouth.

Implant-Supported Bridge

An implant-supported bridge is supported by dental implants rather than natural teeth.

This can be an option when several adjacent teeth are missing and implants are appropriate for the patient.

Your dentist can explain which bridge options may be suitable for your particular situation.

The Dental Bridge Process

The exact treatment process depends on the type of bridge being used, but a traditional bridge generally involves several steps.

01

Consultation & Planning

Your dentist examines the area and evaluates the missing tooth, neighbouring teeth, gums, and bite.

Together, you’ll discuss your treatment options and determine whether a bridge is appropriate.

02

Preparing the Supporting Teeth

For a traditional bridge, the teeth supporting the restoration are carefully prepared so they can accommodate the crowns that will hold the bridge.

03

Creating Your Bridge

Measurements or impressions are taken so the bridge can be custom-made to fit your mouth.

A temporary restoration may be provided while your permanent bridge is being prepared.

04

Placement

Once the permanent bridge is ready, your dentist checks its fit, appearance, and bite before securing it in place.

Caring for Your Dental Bridge

A dental bridge should be cared for much like your natural teeth.

Good oral hygiene is important because plaque and bacteria can accumulate around and underneath the bridge.

We recommend:

  • Brush twice a day
  • Floss every day
  • Clean carefully underneath the bridge
  • Attend regular dental examinations and cleanings
  • Avoid biting extremely hard objects
  • Contact your dentist if your bridge becomes loose or damaged

Your dental team can also show you techniques and tools that can make cleaning underneath your bridge easier.

Is a Dental Bridge Right for You?

A bridge can be an effective way to replace missing teeth, but it isn’t the only option.

Depending on your circumstances, alternatives may include dental implants or removable partial dentures. Your dentist will consider the health of your remaining teeth, gums, bone, bite, and overall oral health when recommending treatment.

At Scarborough Village Dental Care, we’ll explain your options and help you choose an approach that fits your needs.
