Scarborough Dentures: Comfortable, Natural-Looking Replacement

Dentures are custom-made replacements for missing natural teeth. They can replace some or all of your teeth and are designed to fit comfortably within your mouth.

Depending on your needs, dentures can be supported by your remaining natural teeth, the shape of your gums and jaw, or dental implants.

Benefits of Dentures

Replacing missing teeth with dentures can provide several benefits, including:

  • Restore the appearance of your smile
  • Improve your ability to chew
  • Support clearer speech
  • Help support the muscles and structure of your face
  • Restore confidence when smiling and speaking
  • Replace multiple missing teeth with one removable appliance

Modern dentures are designed to provide a comfortable and functional solution for patients who have lost some or all of their natural teeth.

Types of Dentures

The type of denture you need depends largely on how many natural teeth remain and the condition of your oral health.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain.

They replace one or more missing teeth and are designed to fit around your remaining teeth. Depending on the design, they may use clasps or other components to help keep the denture securely in place.

Partial dentures are removable, allowing you to take them out for cleaning and while sleeping.

Complete Dentures

Complete dentures, also called full dentures, are used when all of the natural teeth in an upper or lower arch are missing.

They replace an entire set of teeth and are custom-made to fit the shape of your mouth. With time and practice, complete dentures can help restore your ability to eat, speak, and smile with confidence.

Immediate vs. Conventional Dentures

Immediate Dentures

Immediate dentures are prepared before your remaining teeth are removed. They can be placed shortly after extraction, allowing you to have teeth during the initial healing period.

As your gums and jaw heal and change shape, adjustments or relining may be necessary to maintain a comfortable fit.

Conventional Dentures

Conventional dentures are made after the teeth have been removed and the surrounding tissues have had time to heal.

Because they are made after the healing process, the dentist can create the denture based on the healed shape of your gums and jaw.

Implant-Supported Dentures

For some patients, dentures can be supported by dental implants.

Implants are placed into the jawbone and provide anchors that help stabilize the denture. Implant-supported dentures can offer greater stability than traditional removable dentures and may make eating and speaking more comfortable.

Your dentist will evaluate your oral health and discuss whether implant-supported dentures may be an appropriate option for you.

The Denture Process

Getting dentures generally involves several stages.

01

Dental Examination

Your dentist will examine your teeth, gums, and overall oral health. Any existing infections, decay, or teeth that may need treatment or removal will be evaluated.

02

Impressions & Measurements

Once your treatment plan has been established, impressions and measurements are taken to create a denture that fits the shape of your mouth.

The information is used to create your custom denture.

03

Fabrication

Your denture is custom-made according to the measurements and specifications determined during your appointments.

04

Fitting & Adjustments

Once the denture is ready, you’ll return to the office for a fitting. Your dentist will check the fit, comfort, appearance, and function and make adjustments when necessary.

Getting Used to Your New Denture

A new denture can feel unfamiliar at first. It may take some time for your mouth and muscles to adjust.

Eating and speaking may require some practice, particularly when you first begin wearing the denture. With time and regular use, most patients become more comfortable with their new appliance.

If your denture causes ongoing discomfort, irritation, or difficulty with eating or speaking, let your dental team know. Adjustments may be able to improve its fit and comfort.

Is a Denture Right for You?

Dentures can be an effective way to replace missing teeth, but they’re not the only option. Depending on your oral health and individual circumstances, alternatives may include bridges or dental implants.

At Scarborough Village Dental Care, we’ll examine your smile, discuss your goals, and explain your options so you can make an informed decision about replacing your missing teeth.
